Notice for Members Using Debit Cards in New York and New Jersey.

Immediate Debit Card Announcement

The Credit Union has noticed increased fraudulent debit card activity in New York and New Jersey. If you have funds in your account and a signature based debit card transaction is denied, please try the PIN/POS option. There are two types of Debit Card transactions: debit (PIN) and credit (signature).

What does it mean when I use my Debit Card and the Clerk asks "debit or credit?"

DEBIT

When you reply “debit” to the clerk, it becomes a PIN transaction. You are required to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) after the card has been swiped through a point of sale terminal. With PIN transactions, funds are withdrawn from your Checking Account immediately at the time of the transaction.

CREDIT

When you reply “credit” to the clerk, it becomes a signature transaction. Signature transactions do not require your PIN, however a signature is required to accept the transaction. With signature transactions, funds are held in your Checking Account at the time of purchase until the transactions post to your account in 1 to 3 days.
